DEFORMITY CORRECTION / SCOLIOSIS/ KYPHOSIS

Deformity correction is the surgical adjustment or modification of bone that grows incorrectly as the result of a disease or condition. Spinal deformity correction surgery can be used to help patients with scoliosis, kyphosis, trauma, or other conditions that affect the spine, such as ankylosing spondylitis.

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that occurs most often during the growth spurt just before puberty. While scoliosis can be caused by conditions such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy, the cause of most scoliosis is unknown.

Kyphosis correction surgery involves the implantation of rods and screws that correct the spinal deformity and stabilize the spine in its new position while the spine fuses, or joins, together. These bones ultimately heal into one solid piece for spinal stability and prevention of further curve progression.
